Opportunity

West Virginia’s showcase vineyard and winery has an opening for a grape-grower/winemaker trainee or minimally qualified individual with a suitable background. This is a hands-on position. Selectee will learn the industry from the ground up with a strong emphasis on the practical. In addition to grape growing and winemaking, the selectee will be expected to develop leadership, supervisory, management and administrative skills.

Position: Grape grower/Winemaker
Responsibilities: Supervise and where appropriate participate in all aspects of
operating a small vineyard/winery.

Job Description: Vineyard, including but not limited to: Supervise field crew in all assigned tasks

Planting Training & pruning, including head/cordon training and cane/spur pruning
Pest & disease identification and control, including selection and application of appropriate chemicals. Obtain and keep current a West Virginia Commercial Pesticide
Applicators License. Canopy management, including shoot positioning, shoot thinning and leaf pulling. Crop load management Determining harvest parameters Harvest
Winery, including but not limited to:
Supervise cellar workers in all assigned tasks Crushing Press management, including yield parameters Determination and correction of pre-fermentation juice parameters, including chaptalization, amelioration, pH and acid correction, nutrient status Determination of fermentation parameters, including yeast and M/L selection, fermentation temperature, quantity, type and timing of nutrient additions, completion of M/L Determination of post-fermentation wine parameters, acid and pH corrections, racking, necessity for fining and fining trials, quantity and length of exposure to oak Cold stabilization Bottling and labeling
Champagne production, including but not limited to: Selection and post-fermentation treatment of base wine. Secondary fermentation, including yeast selection, selection of fining agents, time en tirage Disgorging and dosage Corking, wire hoods, capsules, labeling

Qualifications:
First choice: Recent graduate with bachelor’s degree in oenology/viticulture

Second choice: Recent graduate with bachelors degree in a related field (horticulture, biology, pomology, etc)

Third choice: Individual with a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.

Fourth choice: Individual with a bachelor’s degree.
