- Jerry D Mead - 03-18-1999 Jerry, Its happening in Oregon too! Below is a press release issued by an Oregon Representative Simmons, who is sponsoring an anti-direct shipping bill. It is house bill number: House Bill 2884. The e-mail address, if it matters, for the Oregonian representative is: simmons.rep@state.or.us ------------------------------------- Representative Mark Simmons District 58 Union, Wallowa and Umatilla Counties Press Releases Simmons targets Internet liquor sales to kids Issued February 16, 1999 SALEM - State Rep. Mark Simmons, R-Elgin, is going to make it tougher on companies selling liquor to minors over the Internet. Simmons, the Majority Whip in the House, introduced a bill in the Legislature today, which makes it a felony to sell and deliver liquor, beer or wine to minors over the Web in Oregon. There has been an explosion of liquor sales over the Internet the past two years with sales now estimated to be one billion dollars a year. The problem has been that minors can get on the Internet, use a credit card and have the liquor delivered to their home or some other address. Many states, including Oregon, have laws preventing the sale and delivery of liquor to a residence, but the penalties are so small, companies have chosen to ignore them. Simmons' bill has some teeth. He said, "the bill will make the crime a felony, which carries a $100,000 fine or five years in prison, or both." With teenage alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities on the rise, law enforcement groups and others have been targeting direct-sale methods to minors. The newly formed Americans for Responsible Alcohol Access (ARAA) has been leading a fight across the country to get individual states to toughen up their laws and deal specifically with Internet sales. Rep. Simmons' bill, if passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor, would go into effect this year. //The ARAA (100% financed by WSWA) continues its national effort to criminalize beverages containing alcohol to protect the middle tier monopoly. This action will bite them in the butt in the same way that Century Council actions support added negative press and encourage negative legislation. I actually had the attorney general of Michigan tell me yesterday that she was not only protecting the minors of her state by opposing direct shipping, she was protecting adults from (I swear she said this) from "moonshine"!!! When's the last time any of you ordered from www.moonshine.com? Why do the wholesalers permit their trade associations to behave in this manner? It's shameful. JDM// |
