Eliza Kraft Olander hosted a fundraiser for Frankie Lemmon School at her beautiful home in North Raleigh. Bob Foley, known for his fifteen years as winemaker at Pride Mountain Vineyards as well as for Switchback Ridge wines, now devotes his time to Robert Foley Vineyards on Howell Mountain, Napa region. He donated the wines and his band provided music for this outdoor party around the pool area. The evening was called "Howell at the Moon." I sampled the Pinot Blanc, Merlot, Petite Sirah and Charbono. The Merlot paired well with the pulled pork dish prepared by chef Ashley Christensen (with sides of potato salad and cole slaw and preceded by a variety of hors d'oeuvres including mozzarella cheese balls, mint leaves and cherry tomatoes on a skewer). However, my favorite, and the favorite with others at the table I shared, was the Charbono. Nose of smoky autumn leaves and dark fruit. Lip-smacking dark fruit on the palate. Really mesmerizing. (A 4+ lapper finish in WW rankings). Tannins are a touch drying on the finish but not a detractor. Probably we tasted the 2007 since that is the current vintage on sale from the vineyard website. $35.00 from the winery and worth it. Unfortunately we didn't taste the claret which I have liked in past tastings (but can't afford at $110.) The 2006 Robert Foley Claret is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and will probably age gracefully for 10-30 years. I asked Bob if he has a tasting room at his winery, and he replied that the tasting room is two barrels upended on top of Howell Mountain.
We had perfect weather for the event--not too hot or cold and not even breezy.

WW, have you ever had the Bob Foley Charbono?
If so, what did you think of it?

Never had the pleasure. Think it is one of those " Tasting Room Only " thingies. WW

Apparently you can order direct from the website. I plan to order three bottles.
