Nice color, dark garnet. On the nose you get backwards fruit, a bit closed off initially but opens up to tobacco, earth, and dominant red fruit.

Drinking as youthful as ever, this wine has amazing acidity that carries the fruit all the way to the finish line. Drinking lovely right now but will still hold up 3-5 more years in the cellar.

I like the Gruaud Larose, and in fact favor the St Juliens over other Bordeaux regions due to their consistency and dependability. Don't recall ever having the '86 but with two cellar books and two databases lost to history prior to CellarTracker, can't be sure. Sounds like a classy wine.
