Beyond good wine and good friends and good music, what's your favorite seasonal indulgence?

Personally, I have this terribly unoriginal penchant for stinky cheese, fat dates, almonds and pecans, and port.

We can get through the end of year holidays in a pretty traditional mode. The big thing comes in January; made completely from scratch, including the bread, Meatball Sandwiches.

Yhem higher-than-a junkie fat nuts from Hawaii.....Macadamias with about any drinkable liquid. Also St. Andre and any other triple cream hummer I canst get my hot lil' paws on. WW

Eleven months of the year I don't really care for sugar. Then December rolls around and suddenly I have this big fat sweet tooth.

There is a lot to be said for memories; food memories are among the strongest. So, every time the holidays roll in, like JoeyZ, I eat things I avoid the rest of the year--they don't necessarily taste good as much as they give an indescribable comfort--almost like a womb.

absolutely- even if you eat some of them at other times of the year, they just don't taste the same or evoke the same feelings. I indulge in petit fours, pate, pecans, and Port. Hmmm... no alliteration intended...

Eggnog. Rumballs. A wee tad o' the Glenlivit on a cold evening. Sausage bread and cinamon rolls for breakfast. Zinfandel cake for after-dinner dessert. Smoked sausage of equal parts venison, feral hog and BEEF. The list goes on.....

Hosted the second of four holiday partys tonight. Going through aLOT of wine. Mostly from Oz cabernet/shiraz and unwooded chard. Wednesday and Saturday are the last two.

Pecan ball cookies and Peach Buds (a candy manufactured in North Carolina that really tastes like peaches). Also German Lebkuchen and 'S' cookies if I get around to baking. Usually try to have at least one eggnog in honor of the season. Also indulge in shopping for toys and stuffed animals--usually for anonymous recipients (migrant farm workers' children, victims of the floods from Hurrican Fran in past years, Prayer Bears for seriously ill children through my church, the Marines Toys for Tots drive, or the angel tree in the mall.) That brings home the spirit of Christmas and toy shopping is fun besides.

Mine is polished up the old tick licker 10 guage and blasting WW off of my roof before he gets stuck in my chimney. It only stuns him of course, so I can usually run through a couple of boxes of shells....... Is that the Butterfields Peach Buds? Sounds like something worth trying.
I see that they have a variety of fruit flavors

Butterfields is the one. I've only tried one other flavor--can't remember if it was the raspberry or strawberry but I like the peach better.

Last night's crew buzzed through the better part of our stash of Marietta Lot #29. Will have to get on the horn and get some Lot #30 on the way. This year's revelers are showing a strong preference for red wine. The minority white wine drinkers thoroughly enjoyed the St Andrews Unwooded Chard, so it is not quality of the white that moves the majority to red. Last night it was 4 to 1, and that's been the rule.

Always been a little partial to those really crappy chocolate covered cherry dealies you can get in any five and dime. I guess Christmas really gets you right there.... the gut. HEHEHE

The old family recipe fruitcake (not even distantly related to storebought stuff) ...very dark, esp. from curing in bourbon for weeks.

Red wine...though it doesn't qualify as an "indulgence".

A (European style) month long celebration beginning w/ St. Nicholas Day on Dec. 6th & concluding w/ Epiphany on January 6th...complete w/ the childrens' participation in gradually moving the cast of characters from various areas of the house to the manger scene.

Various recipes to "kick it up a notch!"

We don't think of giving as indulgence, but are certainly more aware/participative in this season.

Saw an interesting "Nightline" on the National Guard from Alabama and Ashland/Medford/Grant's Pass area of Oregon mobilized for deployments. It was a Civil Affairs BN from Oregon. I may have met some of them at work if they mobilized through Fort Bragg as many do. Do you know any from your area who have been called up?

Living by Fort Lewis and McCord AFB, lots of people are "disappearing" in the area.

I voted for "W" but I honestly feel he has war on the brain and the UN is just window dressing. Having done my bit in Desert Storm, I feel for the troops, especially during the holiday season.

I think he knows a bunch that we don't, Buckster. Gotta trust him.

I also remember spending the holidays in combat. The troops can handle it, but I'm sure it's much worse for their families. God bless 'em all.
