Hi, I'm new to the boards and I hope that this is the right forum for this question. I noticed that Hotwine is in the Helotes area. I live in San Antonio and was wondering if you could give me any recommendations for good wine retailers. Thanx so much!

Howdy Spursfan and welcome to the board.

I'll be glad to tell you where I shop:

- Wines Best Buy on W. Rhapsody, a few blocks east of West Ave. An independent discounter with a good selection of French, Australian, and California. Many other areas are represented, but those are noteworthy.

- Costco. I shop two of them: one on IH10 at UTSA Blvd, the other in Stone Oak, on 1604. The former has a good journeyman selection, while the Stone Oak store is better for high-end wines.

- Joe Saglimbeni's Fine Wines and Cigars, also on W. Rhapsody but only one block east of West Ave. Joe has the finest selection in town, but also charges premium prices. His store is like a rabbit warren of room after room devoted to specific wine-producing regions of the world. He has tastings on Saturdays, beginning about 11:00 AM. "Gappa" the chocolate Lab is a regular at the tasting bar and is accorded exclusive use of the stool at the left end of the bar.

I usually hit each Costco once per week and WBB about once per month. I try to stay out of Joe's for the sake of peace at home.

Thanx so much for the help. I will definitley go look around at the places you mentioned. I'm trying to read-up a lot about wine since I'm new to the subject, and now that I know where to go shop that will make the experience that much better! Also, do you ever order bottles from discount internet websites? I never have tried and was wondering about the quality.

Look forward to learning more from the boards. Thanx again for your help.

I don't order wines on-line. #1 It's only recently become legal in Texas. And #2 the heat argues against shipment by common carriers (not that I really trust the local distributors to refrigerate their trucks). USPS still won't deliver wines, and last I heard UPS wouldn't either in this area.

My sister gets cases of California wine (through a club)via FedEx, and the bottles are packed in dry ice. Maybe a club is the way to go for you.
