On Jan 19 I begin a quarterly series for an alumni group to explore the difference between Old World and New World winemaking.

The first class pits Bordeaux and Burgundy reds against Cabernet Sauvignons (and Meritage Blends) and Pinot Noir.

I admit to having curtailed my consumption of New World wines over the past few years, for fear that I might become a stick of wood. I'd love some suggestions of New World reds for the above categories, ones that truly express a difference from "traditional" European styles.

Take a look at the cab and pinot threads over the past year. Should be able to get enough material there to conduct the PHD course. WW. If you want some specifics, let me know.

As far as Pinot Noir is concerned, you probably can't get much further from the old world style than with a lot of the big Central Coast juice coming from the likes of Siduri, Loring, ROAR, et al.

Thanks, KC. WW took the easy way out--you worked a little on the question...

If you want to continue in the same vein, I have to name my favorite, Lewelling, as a CA Cab very different than Bordeaux reds. Are you actually going to taste these wines side by side or just talk about them? The reason I ask is because you would be hard pressed to find any I mentioned in the retail market, but they are more than willing to ship from their web sites.

Incidentally, my consumption has been 180 from yours. If only for the fact that I now seem to favor the bigger, extracted reds, I've drunk very few old world wines.

You could save a little coin, and find a little easier some cabs from Oz and pinots from Oz or Kiwiland.

KC, I will be tasting them side-by-side, and with food too. So, I suppose I'll just locate some in the NYC market from Australia, California and N Zealand. Was hoping I could get a quick reference so I did not have to search and destroy...

Foodster I wasn't shirking, just thot it'd be easier than one-on-one reporting. My favorite Calif Cabs in the med price range are Markham, Whitehall Lane, BV Rutherford, Mondavi Oakville, Ch Montelena Calistoga Cuvee, Justin, and Cakebread. The best of the Pinots I drink IMHO are Dehlinger, Loring, W.H. Smith " Hellenthal ' Gary Farrell "Olivet Lane", Castalia " Rochiola "
Joe Swan, and Scherrer. Your post was like a lot we get from the novices, just a request without any parameters. WW
