Huge storm hit tonight at 11:30 so I thought I'd check the basement....water starts pouring in everywhere just as I get there. Thank God for the wet vac and the power staying on. Had to move a lot of the wine to a different area and Eileen broke 2 bottles, inexpensive though and replaceable. Finished slurping everything up at about 4 AM.

Ugh! Been there, done that. My basement floods with every heavy rain. Speaking of rain, I'm a little tired of it. This has been the rainiest summer I can remember. I'm getting moldy.

- Innkeeper - 08-11-2003

Almost the entire local raspberry crop molded on the vine.

RAIN??? What in the name of Ralph Kramden is RAIN? WW

- Kcwhippet - 08-11-2003

It's that stuff we've been getting dumped on us every day for about the past two weeks.

- hotwine - 08-11-2003

Our ranch foreman is back to signing his correspondence "Waitinonrain". It's dry, dry, dry here.

- Thomas - 08-11-2003

Rain! That's all we get here. At my Finger Lakes home, we have lots of weeds and tall grass, but few crops: plums rotted; apples vanished; raspberries withered; grapes are not happy either--we did get a good blueberry crop (don't know why) and peaches and pears are holding out for a potential blast of warm, dry air.

In NY City, as we used to say when I was a Goodfella: fuhgeddaboudit!

- winedope1 - 08-12-2003

well, the garage isn't too happy and neither are the vuvumbers. However, my watermelons are thrilled. Saw the bright yellow orb roday. Maybe it will stick arounf for a few days. It was cool and comfortable tonight. Sat on my postage stamp porch and sipped a couple of glasses of chenin blanc. Mmmm... summer ; )

- winoweenie - 08-13-2003

My 5 am walks have been slightly curtailed by a string of 5 straight days with the record-setting hig/low temps. Yesterday set a record for not only the highest-low temps on this day in August but the Highest/Low temp EVER recorded in August, 95*. The normal is in the high 70s'.I'm sure it's Buckos' fault somehow. WW(wilted-weener)

Yesterday morning I drove over to Togus VA just this side of Augusta, and it rained all the way. For a period I had to put the wipers on extra fast, and actually hydroplaned a little once. Anybody out there want any of this stuff!!!

- hotwine - 08-13-2003

We'll take all you care to send us, IK. Gotta watch out for that hydroplaning... it sneaks up on you. There's a 300 yd stretch of a local highway that snookers drivers all the time, because it's on a flat furve. Only way to deal with it in a hard rain is to drop speed from 70 mph down to less than 45 as you approach the curve (which goes over real big with folks behind you).

- Kcwhippet - 08-13-2003

I hear you really have to watch out for those flat furves. They can really getcha when you're not paying attention. Sort of like when you're hunting gnus.

- winedope1 - 08-13-2003

I'm always on the lookout for those darned furves. also for stray vuvmbers (see my post above). WD

Ring the Bells, Shoot the fireworks, Toot the Trumpet!!!! We were blessed with a REAL rainstorm from the monsoon( what we call the weather pattern that develops here in July and August)last night. LOTS of beautiful wet wondrous water. Now I have a small reccolection of what it looks and feels like. Hot-Dang Hotsie, hope some comes your way. - Wine-Oh - 08-14-2003

Oh, what we would give for a little of your rain up here in God's Country. We here in Missoula are surrounded by wildfires. There are eight burning, one just 8 1/2 miles from town. Thought we could escape the smoke by going up to the lake (Flathead Lake, 60 miles north), but there the smoke is drifting down from the fires in Glacier Park. It has been a horrendously hot and dry summer here with outdoor recreation now severely restricted. Pray for rain!

- Georgie - 08-14-2003

WW,I hope you danced around like Gene Kelly. Isn't it remarkable that as much as we think we are in charge of things, Mother Nature really has the last word.

Strange yellow thing in the sky today!

- hotwine - 08-14-2003

Glad you finally got wet, WW. We're still waitin'. Would be nice to have to wear the rubber boots to reach the cellar, like last year.

Which reminds me.... a visiting lady last week asked to see the cellar, so I dutifully took her out there. Opened the outer door, and a little garter snake slithered down the steps ahead of us. "Eeek!", cried the lady, and ran back in the house. Hee, hee. I owe that snake.
