Verve records has a series called the " Diva Series " that showcase all of the great women artists. Am stunned by the Sarah Vaughan CD. It absolutely rocks. The chosen songs are wonderfully re-mastered and she sounds even better than I remembered. Rite now she's kicking "Shiny Stockings" in the head. WOW!!!!!ww

There was a lady on The Early Show on CBS this morning named Betsyann Faiella. She sings Sinatra songs in a very feminine manner. Will be looking for her album: "Can I be Frank."

Playrd a 2nd "Diva" album this PM of Anita O'Day and like the 1st is a killer. Anita at her swinging zenith. Probably the least appreciated and most talented of the lady singers. Blessed with perfect pitch and a personality that busted male camorones at the time. No fluff from this lady. When on a first gig at a great Chicago gig the owner asked her to wear a low-cut revealing dress and she told hoim she'd be singing in a business suit. After a stand-off she prevailed and killed the gathering. Was able to sing faster more clearly than any one I've ever heard, she is indeed fan-fricken-fabulosios. WW

ww, one night back in the eighties we went to catch Anita O'Day at our then favorite jazz club in Manhattan--Marty's. Turned out that Marty was a jerk and a coke head. He reneged on Anita's contract and so she walked off the stage mid-way through the show. But that first half was worth the price of admission and more.

I have seen her a num bert of times--the last was just a couple of months ago at the Blue Note in Manhattan. At 80 plus she has a little trouble but she made the second act sound exactly like a second act. She refers to herself as a song stylist, not a singer; she has a point but only a small one.

As for Sarah--nobody did or does it better. What she did with octaves most other singers can only wish for. And the velvet sexiness of the lady's voice sends tingles through this old body.

She was just as dedicated to the quality of the musicians who worked with her. She once stopped a recording session and made the producers get another tenor man as the one on the set was tuned up flat. Was lucky enough to see her 9 or 10 in person and she was all business.WW

Youse guys'll start accusing me of pimping for Verve but I just got all of these "Divs Series" CDs in so am going thru them every morning. Today it's Blossom Dearie. One of the greatest stylist. I really get jealous of you Foodie every time One of the NY-based musicians hit my CD changer. Got a couple of her recordings she did in the 50s in France and all of the Verve tracks. Haven't been able to find any of the ones she recorded on her own label. Sorry I digress. This is a great compilation that showcases this performers incredible talents.WW!!!

ww, I have the recordings she did in France, and elsewhere. Her French version of It Might As Well Be Spring is priceless. Blossom is a blessing.

Saw her a few times in NYC in the past, at Michael's Pub, but haven't heard much from her these days. The last time I saw her she shared the bill with Chris Conner--what a night!

Saw Sarah once in Detroit along with Thelonius Monk and several other big stars. Fog delayed arrivals of some of the performers. Sarah Vaughn might have been the one whose plane was diverted to Toledo and had to take ground transportation from there.

The 4th CD in this series is the very ralented Carmen McRae. This, like the others, is a comilation of the best from various recording dates and, like the others, swings its' hummaker off. For the uninitiated to these artists this series is a must hear. WW

WW pimping Verve. I oughta be shocked and appalled but it's one of my favorite labels, too. Have a looksee (and a listen-hear):

Here's a link to DIVA (this CD is just a 'best of' from WW's whole DIVA series). WW may be on to something here:

My last Diva recording is by Astrid. I have the complete works of Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald and the rest are not my cup of tea.WW

In this group was Carmens' last studio recording, " Sarah, dedicated to you ". Accompanied by the great Shirly Horn and her trio this tears the speakers outta' the walls. She rocks, she swings, she moans and groans, and she and Shirly seem joined at the hip. IMHO, one of the great McRae albums of all times. 18 incredible songs. From Poor Butterfly to Black Coffee it has grip. WW
