Hi,
I have read in many places that wine should be kept on its side so that the cork will not dry out... My question is: should I avoid buying wine that is straight up on the store shelf? Is there a difference if the wine is for near term consumption vs. long term cellaring?

TIA.

A good question. Even a good wine shop might have wines displayed standing upright. If, like my shop, the wines are rotated with wines on their side at least every other week, there is no problem. Also, most young wines can be stood straight up for a number of weeks without incident, but generally it is best to store wines on their sides. Of course, if the bottle stoppers are plastic, then it is a moot point.
