My friend loves a Brunello, but I have not found one in my budget, for regular drinking. Is there an alternative wine, either domestic or imported, with similar characteristics but more affordable?

Hi Dan, and welcome to the Wine Board. Bingo! Try a Rosso di Montalcino. They are frequently made by the same producers that make Brunello. The Rossos are both much less expensive and much more approachable. Nothing like a fully aged out Brunello, but a suitable substitute. They range in price from high teens to high twentys. Do not mistake it for Rosso di Montepulciano. Both are nice, but quite different.
