Hello OZ, and welcome! Best way to begin is to buy a good book. Andrea Immer's "Great Wines Made Simple" is the best. Follow her instructions, and try the different styles of wine. Not only will you learn of the different varieties, but you'll also get a feel for what you like. Have fun!

At what age in Texas can you consume or buy wine in public? If you are old enough, try to get to wine tastings in your area.

But do read some books, and seek a class.

Actually the best way is probably to go with a pen and a note pad to a winery that offers free, or a very cheap tasting when you can. That's my view anyway. Mark down notes on what you like, and what you didn't. I realized I didn't like (young) Cab's from the start, just from going over my notes. I have yet to find out if I like aged Cabs better, but for now Merlot, Zin, Viognier, Syrah, Port and Muscat's remain consistently myy favorites. I am still looking for that first Pinot and Cab that I can enjoy.

Just keep your head down when you go over there. You've got two years to do a lot of good reading, including right here.

Graywolf -- try a 2001 Napa or Sonoma Valley Cab. Hess is very good, as are most of the others. Most need about 5 years to age.
