Yesterday someone proceeded to share info from an unknown article, that Merlot Wines are made from the barrel scrapings of other wines. Of course I was in the middle of enjoying a glass of Merlot from a $50 a bottle wine. Is there any basis of truth to this tale! I hope not! Please advise if you can.

Thanks ......Mark G

Hi Mark and welcome to the Wine Board. Absolutely not. Merlot is a separate grape variety. It is fairly easy to grow, and it is produced in many regions. The recent movie "Sideways" threw some water on Merlot's quality, and thus these urban lengends flourish.

Ask that person to share that "unknown" article with you, and report back, Mark. It won't happen, because they're completely, totally wrong. As IK says, Merlot is a grape variety, just as is Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, etc.

And Mark, you might ask him if he knows the most expensive bottle of wine produced,(Petrus) is made from Merlot. So much dis-information, so many idiots to spread it. WW

"Yesterday someone proceeded to share info from an unknown article, that Merlot Wines are made from the barrel scrapings of other wines."

Mark,

Thanks for the laugh! Not laughing at you of course - just the thought.

Let's think about it. Wine is a liquid. It doesn't harden like cheese. So let's say that some particulate matter does remain on the barrel to be scraped and was made into wine. It would be in such a low volume that it would be so expensive! Not the bottle of Foxhorn that I have seen in supermarket for $2.99!

Trust us. Merlot is a grape.

I told this story to one of my buyers today and unfortunately for him he had a mouth full of Chianti when I said it.

Bummer! I was hoping it would come out his nose! hehe!

Mark,

If you're friend based his distaste for merlot from the movie, Sideways... he probably didn't realize that the Cheval Blanc 61 is made from the merlot grape!

LOL - And, from his statement... he doesn't know a merlot from a merlot from a merlot in the first, second, and third place!

Winegroucho,

You are toooooo funny! It's just a good thing you didn't end up wearing it from his spouting! I love a good bit of humor! (It's something I would have done too! )

So many wines... so little time!

Cheers

Correction,

I knew I should have re-read my posting... in the first line, replace "you're" with "your."

Thanks

That is pretty funny too! I'm not sure how many people caught the your vs. you're mistake, but I'd like to think after several years that everyone caught the winegroucho one! hehe!
