Why don't you just go out and buy two inexpensive wines from Banrock Station. One would be their regular chardonnay and the other their "unwooded" chardonnay. The unwooded one will tell you what chardonnay should look, smell, and taste like. The regular one will tell you what most chardonnay produced in Australia, America, Chile, and elsewhere looks, smells, and tastes.
