The first time I tried some wines, (about 10 or12 years ago), I tried some Sutter Home Merlot’s and red Zinfandel’s, and I really didn’t like any of them. I seem to recall that they all seemed bitter to me at the time.

Recently someone suggested I try something sweet like a Chenin Blanc, Johannisberg Riesling, or a Harvest wine. So I did, and I have to admit these are great. I also discovered, (by accident), that I really like Gewurztraminer’s, (a 1996 Fetzer was one I tried first). These are typically a “dry” white are they not?

Based on what I like in white wines can someone suggest a red that I might enjoy (in the $5.00 to $15.00 range)? I live in the Northwest (Boise Id.) if that matters.

Another question. What is a “table wine”?

Hi Bee, and welcome to the Wine Board. Those whites that you tried where most certainly off dry or slightly sweet. There are very few reds with that degree of sweetness. Sutter Home is where they are usually found, but you didn't like them. Try a Reunite Lambrusco. Also try some White Zins which are really roses'. Table wine in the U.S.A. is any wine that is not sparkling wine, dessert wine, or fortified wine.

Thanks Keeper, that Reunite is really good, a little tangy, but not at all bitter. I’m feeling a little braver about red’s now.

Beebeep, should be able to find Hogue Johannisberg Riesling & several 'late harvest' whites in your price range on grocery store shelves.

Oh yes cpurvis, you are right, there’s no trouble finding a nice Soft Chenin Blanc, or Johannisberg Riesling, (I’m enjoying a Ste. Chapelle Johannisberg Riesling right now ). But I’ve been having trouble finding a red that I liked.

Although, it is difficult to find sweet red wine on your dealer's shelf other than the Reunite; most Mid-west and Eastern wineries make a full line including sweet ones. Here is an example: http://www.mountpleasant.com/cgi-local/store/commerce.cgi?product=SWEET
