There's a lot of wines in that range that wow me, I hope they wow your girl friend. 97' Blackstone Napa merlot, 97' Swanson merlot, 97' Raymond Napa Reserve merlot,97' Pride Merlot, 97'Chateau St. Jean Merlot, 98' Lehmann Barossa shiraz, 98'Leasingham Classic Clare Shiraz, 98' Greg Norman Limestone Coast Shiraz, 98' Lehmann Clancys, 97' or 98' Rosemount GSM, 97' or 98 Pirramimma Shiraz or Fox Creek Vixen sparkling Shiraz. All are dark, full bodied, soft and tasty and under $40.

Champagne. The real stuff from France. Cliquot Yellow Label, Taittinger, there's lots of 'em in the range of $30-$40. And if bubbly doesn't put her in the mood, nothing will!

I know, I know, you said red wine. But Champagne is what the situation calls for.

Drew's suggestion for the Sparkling Shiraz fills the bill best. If you can't find it among your limited local resources, go with the best bubbly you can find. In the wine world we celebrate with bubbles.

Daseib, welcome to the board. Hate to say this but must concur this is one situation that screams for a SW. You could get a nice Rose Champagne ( My own personal preference) but make it the bubbly. Even the most hard-core reddies` in the world must bow occassionally to the power of a well-used bottle of bubbly to augment Amore! winoweenie

Even while I was posting reds I was thinking Champagne,Champagne! My wife and I late on Christmas Eve every year, it's the only time together alone between families, share a bottle of the bubbly while opening presents...it's perfect. I'm off today and I'm gonna visit my wine guy for just that bottle.
