It was about this time last year that I ran my first real wine party and I think it went well. Have since gone and put together a few smaller tastings and they've also gone well (for me anyways)...so it's time to go back big again. This Saturday doing a 30th anniversary recreation (kind of) of the 1976 Paris tasting (California versus France). Have extended the tasting to include Champagne-sparkling wine, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir/Burgundy and a Dessert/Sauternes set in addition to the Chardonnay and the Cabernet Sauvignon/Bordeaux. Obviously we are not recreating it in its totality (each person is bringing one wine and some can't stretch for the top end burgundy or the Cask 23) but it will be true in spirit. Double blind. Will let everyone know of the outcome! I'm thirsty...I mean excited!

Sounds super!

Sounds like a plan Eng. Drink alla' them SWs' early on so you can get to the stars en masse. Super idea. WW

Have a great time. I'll be interested in the results. I think what people are accustomed to drinking can influence the results--i.e., if someone has been drinking California cabs for years, they may not take to the Bordeaux and vice versa. However, if some of the guests have not been into wine drinking for any length of time, they may bring a fresh perspective to the match-ups.

I join with all others in eagerness for a recapitulation of your event!

What he said! (I don't think I've seen or heard anyone use "recapitulation" in a sentence in 20 years!)

Hey that sounds like some serious fun.

Awaiting the results, as well.

It's actually been an interesting process already. I've got friends who are very novice (including myself) but who are ready to "do battle". Both sides (suppliers of French wine and Suppliers of Californian wine) are claiming that I've stacked the chips against them (in a friend way of course). Since I don't know what is coming from where....it should be interesting. And these should be reasonably affordable wines (? who knows when ego gets in the way) More on Sunday.
