Hi All,

We have a case (12 bottles) of Les Fortes De La Tour 1986, second pressing. We have been told that this is a highly collectible wine. Can anyone confirm this for us, and perhaps tell us what it's worth?

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

Peter

It is the second label of Chateau Latour.....

Try www.wine-searcher.com or try www.margaux.org for additional information.

The following information comes from the Cht. Latour web site:

1987

The weather conditions:
January was very cold (-15° C on 18 January at Latour), and the wines had to endure a long period of frost. During the winter, the rainfall was very low. Shooting was noted on 8 April, and May was normally rainy but very sunny, inducing a quick growth with a very fine « sortie de grappes » (grape appearance). Unfortunately, June was rainy and dull thus affecting flowering and causing grape-falling and millerandage. Flowering was very long, from 3 to 29 June. The second half of July broke all records of cold and rain. August was fine but the beginning of September was wet. From 8 to 19 September, all the late bunches were cut down in order to improve quality. Fortunately temperatures increased between 18-22 September and ripening accelerated. Vintage took place from 30 September to 17 October in rain with only four dry days ! However cold temperatures protected the vines against grey rot and the ripeness was rather satisfactory.

Vintage quality and tasting comments:

A rigorous selection was imposed in this difficult vintage, and some vats were downgraded into a generic «Pauillac». From the beginning, the wines were not very concentrated, yet they remained silky and elegant, without any tannic aggressivity or greenness. The evolution of the color and aromas (coffee, licorice, tobacco) is quite rapid but the structure of the wines is holding quite well (tasting : June 2000)..

Quality: Mediocre year

The moment for optimal drinking and best way of serving:

Grand Vin: has now passed its optimum and should be drunk quickly. No decanting is necessary.

Les Forts de Latour: drink from 1993 until 2000. No decanting is necessary.

Based on the above information, if your wine was cellared properly it is ready to drink NOW. If it was not properly stored, you just might have a case of vinegar.
