First post here. I'll give a little bit of background on myself. I have just gotten into wine in the last few months. Finally a common hobby that my wife and I both enjoy. I've been to 3 or 4 tastings so far and one festival (all Ohio wineries, very interesting). My question is this:

Are there any web sites that kind of act as a "Bible" for wine lovers? Kind of like an encyclopedia. I'm looking for something where I can plug in any wine, vintage, grape variety, ect. and get the run down on it. Anything like this out there? Thanks in advance and I'll try to contribute here as much as I possibly can, considering how new I am to this.

HI Immo, and welcome to Wine Board. You can use this board. There are two options: You can go to the thread where the wines you are interested in and go back as far as you want; or you can use the search function to look for something specific. If you want to fine out where you can buy a particular wine and how much it costs, go to www.wine-searcher.com

Thank you Innkeeper...that's certainly a big help. I'll give those a try. I'm going to a restaurant that is located in our city's perferoming arts theater tonight. My next door neighbor just moved in and he's a supervisor there so he said "dinner's on him tonight!". I'll try a few of the wines. Then we're going to a wine tasting later on. I'll post some of my thoughts tomorrow.

From this board there is a rundown on the major grapes of the world.

There is a lot of them - don't let it scare you!

From there you can check out the individual varietal threads for recommendations within each catagory.

Welcome to the board and the Wonderful World of Wine....such an adventure!

I actually broke down and paid the on-line annual fee for The Wine Spectator. It seems really easy to use and has lots of info. I'm happy with it so far.

If you really want to read up on a nice variety of wines, I'd suggest reading "Wine for Dummies," and afterwards "The Wine Bible." Both have wines sorted out and described by regions and by variety, and are wonderfully informative, and suprisingly easy reads. Neither read like a textbook, which makes the read engrossing while being informative.
