I am a diabetic and also have high blood pressure. My dr recommended that i drink a class of wine a bedtime. What kind of wine do I get that helps with the heart, diabetes and blood pressure. friends been saying get a red wine. I am new to all of this and would appreciate some help. I do know that I would like to try something sweet. any idead of on what to get?

All reds are good for the heart and help with high BP, but none are good for diabetes. Alcohol and sugar and simple carbohydrates should be avoided. However, if the diabetes is under control with drugs or diet and exercise, then a little red wine would be good for you.

The only sweet reds I know of are Mogen David and Manishevitz. Both are extremely sweet, and frequently used in both Christian and Jewish religious traditions.

I would rather see you get into some nice Merlots, Red Zinfandels, Syrahs, or Cabernet Sauvignons. Try a few of these and see if you like them. They are all an aquired taste, so give it some time. The first sip may taste like vinegar to you, but that should abate with further sipping.

BTW, the more expensive bottles (in the $12-$20 range) will taste better. Rodney Strong, Hess, Sterling, Robert Mondavi, Copolla, Beringer, J. Lohr, Rancho Zabaco, all these will fit the bill. If you want some more specific recommendations, look around this board under names of specific varieties.

Good luck!

Thank you bernkastler for responding to my post. My husband went and brought me a bottle of Andretti Merlot. the man in the wine store recommended it. he also recomemmended something called Chaddsford Sangria. but my husband went with the Merlot. I will gave it a try and see how I like it.I'm also going to try some of the ones you recommended. thanks again.
