I guess the wine laws for Georgia have finally changed and an individual can order up to 5 cases of wine via the internet per year. Who are your favorite internet sites to order wine from? I recently bought a 2000 bordeaux for 17.99 and saw it on the internet for 10.99. If you could let me know, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Would love for the laws to have changed here, and I could be wrong, but I haven't heard a thing. As far as I know, as of 2000, wineries can purchase a $50 permit that allows them to ship a limited amount of cases into the state (50) and no more than 5 to any individual. You have to order on the premises of an in-state or out-of-state winery. No other shipments are allowed, and I don't know of an online wine shop that ships to GA. When the governor signed the bill, he retained felony penalties for violations. If you have any info about any recent changes, please let me know!

By the way, the Oct. 15 issue of WS has an article about each state's shipping laws.

My wife heard something on Clark Howard. I will call the show and ask what the deal is.

If you're able to find anything out from the show, please post!

Todd & Dan, there's a guy down on the Spanish Thread that needs your help.

- toddabod - 09-19-2002

I think Clark Howard was wrong on this one. People have responded on his message board and it does involve wineries importing wines that aren't sold in Georgia. I get tired of the religious rednecks in Georgia that try to pass their values on the rest of us. Not being able to buy alcohol on Sundays is ridiculous as well as not being able to buy it legally on the internet. What a bunch of good ol' boys.

Blame the wholesalers, not those whom you hath blameth.

- toddabod - 09-19-2002

Who makes the laws, I hope like hell it isn't the wholesalers. They might put some money into the lawmakers pockets, but that is about it.

Current Georgia Law:

Liquor laws make for strange bed fellows in the sunny Southland. There are coalitions of religious fundamentalists and business interests.

When I was in college in Mississippi, one could buy liquor and wine in bars and liquor stores, but we had to drive to the next county to buy and drink beer -- and how many college kids wrecked between college and "The Crossroads" beer joints?

The churches joined with the beer sellers in the next county to keep beer sales out of the county the university was in. But we always figured some of the deacons also owned some of the beer joints.

I'd love to know how wine made the transition from sacrament to the bane of Baptists.

According to creative loafing the law has been changed to allow individuals to purchase up to 5 cases of wine per year, provided that the particular wine company does not have wholesale distribution in Georgia. It's possible the wine being sold at wine.com has such distrubutors.

Another web site http://www.volcanowinery.com/shipping_wine.php3 states that Georgia has just been moved to the "Yes" list.

I don't know how this will work, but I look forward to trying to save some money on the internet.

- Innkeeper - 09-20-2002

It's more about availability than saving money. S&H has to be factored in. Plan on at least $15-$18 per case, and some folks sock to you at $28-$30. Always ask.

You can save money during the current world wide wine glut. Both WineExpo and Southern Hemisphere are excellent bottom feeders. Suspect you can find similar bargains at your larger retailers or Sam's/Costco type operations.

Dananne,
Where do you buy your wine in Atlanta?

- dananne - 09-20-2002

Toddabod:
I shop all around, rotating regularly, but mostly at Tower on Piedmont, Sherlock's on Northside Pkwy, Ansley Wine Merchants on Monroe, The Grape in Vinings, and Greens on Ponce. Used to love a little shop in Buckhead called The Grape Escape, but they've closed. You?

- toddabod - 09-20-2002

I mainly shop at Whole Foods/Harry's farmers market in Alpharetta, but also at Sherlocks on Peachtree. I am going to check out Green's on Buford because it is close to work. I live in Dunwoody so I have to stop on my way home to get wine from Buckhead because there is nothing in Dunwoody. I am interested in how you did your wine cellar. Did you buy a stand alone unit or build one yourself? I only have a few bottles in my collection and they are going fast, but i would like to start collecting. Sherlocks has free wine tastings on Saturday between 2 and 4 as well.

toddabod,

Regarding the cellar question, it is a free-standing KoolTemps. It came disassembled (cut shipping cost in half) and we put it together (definitely a 2-person job). The hard part was installing the cooling unit as it is heavy and is installed in the top (6 ft up). We love it and only complain about little things, like some Burgundys are so fat that they don't fit in some of the middle racks, it's hard to tell which bottles are in the back (2 deep storage), etc.

We've been hovering at around 150 bottles due to attrition
