Hi there, I know that red is where all the benefits are due to the resveratols contained within with the soaked red skins...BUT just by chance are there any benefits with white wines??? Could someone please tell me if the whites do carry some benefits as I am noticing that my body does very well with the whites. The reds on the other hand, esp. the cabernet sauvigs, tend to give me a headache, and overall heaviness even with just 1 glass the last few times I have tried them with lunch/dinner. Is merlot considered a lighter red??? Pardon my lack of wisdom re wines. Please also suggest a few smooth merlots in the $20 price range if that even exists. Trying to enjoy the fun of these wines and get some benefits at the same time....heard it keeps cholesterol in check and I want to continue doing that also as I am getting older. Red wine or red grapes and a few other things such as tea contain resveratol which is a substance that repairs the DNA in the body. This is particularly helpful in keeping the heart healthy. Pinot Noir has the highest concentration of it for some reason. Check the Merlot thread for some good suggestions for that wine.

White wine does not help in this particular regard. There have been studies that suggest the white wine can be helpful in preventing certain cancers.

I have heard that whites have less calories.

Alcohol and residual sugar are the sources of calories in wine. Red wines usually have more alcohol but all off dry whites have more sugar and thus calories.

Whites stain less. That's about it.

the carpet or your teeth??

I take my teeth out when I drink wine. Then I only have to worry about the carpet.
