I am new to this web site and this is the first time I have used the message board. I am wondering if anyone knows if certain years of wine production for the juras are better than others. I have a 1992 Chateau-Chalon, vin jaune. I have done some research and although most sites say you can keep these wines for up to 50 years I would like to know if some years are better than others. I have actually never tasted a Jura and would like to do so; so I guess my real question is should I drink my '92 and buy a different/better year if I like it or should I hold the '92 and try drinking another year? Any thoughts?

Hi Cru, and welcome to the Wine Board. I would try it soon, and see if you like it. If it is closed, let it set awhile, and wait a little longer on the next one. From what little I know, the '92 should be ready to go.

Thanks for this. I will try it and let you know how it tastes. One other question that you may or may not know the answer to is how much should I trust general wine charts? I am referring to the charts that list the wine variety and location and then rate each year. Should I trust these or can quality really vary from Chateau to Chateau even in the same region and for the same year?

It depends on the region. Take Napa Valley Cab for example. There are producers who make wine that is ready to go on release, and others whose wines take ten or fifteen years to flesh out. I would guess that Jura would be more homogeneous, but it would still be helpful to know the reputations of individual producers.

Yes, of course. I live just outside of Seattle, Washington.

- Innkeeper - 06-10-2004

Because the total of posts go back to one's previous posts.
