I have a cold now and when I do, I don't drink wine. Seems to be to be a bit of a waste as I can't smell or taste anything. however, I've got a friend who is a bottle a day guy. Never misses one even if he has a cold or the flu.

Maybe its just me. I don't eat really good food when I sick. I don't drink wine when I'm sick.....I can't taste them anyways so why waste them when soda crackers and chicken soup work.

Well, since I think the point is to enjoy the wine, I'm with you on this one.

Geez, I write about the stuff and I skip days if I'm taking antibiotics(can lessen the potency) or even if I feel a bit off. There will be plenty of opportunities to drink wine. Why force yourself if you're not up for it?

I've been sick as a dog since New Years Eve... and no, it wasn't a self-adminstered illness, either. The real thing, no voice, no sense of smell, no appetite. Result? The last glass of a bottle of unoaked chardonnay sat in my fridge for days, then took the express route to the ocean. (Oxidised all to hell by the time I could face it.)

On the positive side, having a cold meant I was able to drink whisky-laced hot toddys at lunchtime and not feel guilty.

Let's hear it for old fashioned cold remedies! Do hot toddies work?

The last time I had a cold was back in 1999. It came on the day after cg's wedding, and the day after that we were at the Santa Rosa facility of WineToday (before the NY Times blew them up). Leslie Sbrocco had set up a huge tasting for us and some friends of ours. I was at the stage where your nose won't stop running and you go through two boxes of tissues a day. Anyway, the tasting was great fun by all accounts, but you couldn't prove it by me. They showed us the process they use to judge the wines they get, and gave us their scoring sheets to judge 8 flights of 5 wines each. I have no notes because I couldn't smell or taste a thing. Judy had a wonderful time, too bad I missed it. A few months later they were all gone - Leslie off to the NY Times, her own web site, and authoring books; Tim Fish off to WS and other pursuits.

My wife knows when I don't feel well only by the tell-tale signs of food uneaten and wine undrunk. But it is so rare...

Whaz a Cold?? Here in the desert our main concern is heat-strokeitis which is cured by excessive drinking of fluids(wine). I don't drink so I can drink there-by the sabbaticals. WW

I advocate Scotch on the Rocks for a cold.

I also avoid wine at those times, for the same reasons. Favor a toddy made with a shot of white rum, teaspoon of sugar, and juice of half a lemon, in a coffee mug and stirred with boiling water. Times two. Then to bed. Makes me sweat while asleep, and that seems to help expel the bug.

Hope you are feeling better, Skeeter.

Ya'll are gonna think I'm sick, (in the head).

Nighttime Theraflu with honey and brandy. Warms the insides and takes care of the cold symptoms so you can sleep.

- hotwine - 01-07-2005

Sounds like a winner CG. I normally also use honey in my recipe vs sugar.

- Skeeter - 01-07-2005

I'm actually about 98% my old self again today... the 3/4 empty can of Tui Pale Ale sitting by the ol' PC testifies to that.

My theory on Hot Toddies, Georgie... they probably don't help the cold, but they sure as hell make them a little nicer to endure.

And luckily i'm going to be well just in time for the father-in-laws birthday dinner. (I'm playing the part of Dial-a-Wino as usual... I always pay for my meal with a bottle or two of the good stuff.)

I have a little cold right now and still drink a little wine at night...I make them taste buds stand up and act right!

Do they (the tastebuds) say, "Yessir Herrfuzz."

- wineguruchgo - 01-07-2005

I'm a Calvados and cup of tea girl when I'm not feeling well. Before I know it I'm sleeping like a baby.
