I am fairly new to wine. I kind of know what I like but could use some help selecting the right one. I am looking for a sweet red wine, the other problem I have is where I live the choices are very limited and the staff completely unknowledgeable. Any help would be appreciated.

I am in the same boat as you..I have to drive a good way to even get it..and when I get there I don't know what to get..I have been getting Turning Leaf Merlot.. The man told me it wasn't a dry wine..but like you I want something alittle sweeter...

Lambruscu is the most recomended sweet red. Riuniti is about the most popular. I understand there are better ones out there, but that is the only one I have had. For a very sweet red wine try a Port. I had one this weekend that is very good. Warres Warrior Special Reserve Port, it is usualy less than $15.

Muscadine wines from NC are sweet. I don't know how available they are outside of NC. A new winery opened up just this year right up the road from me, they will be having online ordering soon. There Noble/Cab. wine is good. http://www.osvwinery.com/

BTW, almost all red wines are dry, some are just more fruity than others. Search back on this thread and you can see alot better explaniations on this subject.

But Port is fortified having a higher alcohol content than wine.

Try a gamay from California or a Beaujolais from France. These are light red wines with lots of fruit although they are still dry.

You might also look into some of the young wines from the Rhone in France. Cotes du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Villages, again dry red wines but they have a lot of good dark red fruit flavors to them.

You could also try White Zinfandel.

Thank you for your help. I will try some of the suggestions if I can get them locally, which is not an easy task considering the state I live in.

Hi Childbar and welcome to the board. On the contrary, the last time I was in Salt Lake the state liquor stores carried a very comprehensive selection of wine. The one in Trolley square had lots of inventory. WW

Thanks WW, I will have to check it out, I don't usually get down that way.
