Hello all.

As you can tell I am a big fan of the film Sideways. The film has inspired me in many ways. One which is wine.

I am green when it comes to this subject. I do enjoy it and I wish to become more knowledgeable about wine. I have tried several different kinds and I have found that I really like Pinot Noir.

It seems to have light but favorable taste and it goes down very easy. I also have coronary artery disease. It has been suggested by my doctor that a couple of glasses of red wine a day would benefit me. I have tried Merlot and Cabernet; I like them both but the Pinot Noir really seems to grab my pallet the best.

I guess in time I would like to become more knowledgeable about wine. Having said that I'm looking to be pointed in the right direction.

After opening a bottle what is the best way to store it?

After finding what I like, I have started out with bottle of 2001 Cavit Pinot Noir. What are some other recommended brands?

Any other advise in getting started in the world of wine would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to having many great conversations, as everyone here seems very accommodating, friendly and eager to share their knowledge

Well, first of all Cavit is a huge cooperative in Trentino, Italy. They produce oceans of wines that are made to be inoffensive and easy to drink. Some decent domestic Pinot Noir that won't put a hurt on your wallet are Estancia, Pepperwood Grove, Sebastiani and Riverview. These are all in the $10 to $12 range. At just a bit more there are many, many others. I suggest you go to your local wine shop and speak to the wine guy. He can help. Your profile doesn't say where you're from, so I can't suggest any shops local to you.

I see I forgot to fill that feild in. I'm in Lynn, MA. I see your in MA too!

Hi Miles and welcome to the board. KC is well-qualified to help you in your choice of wine shops and wines for drinking. You're pointed in the right direction about the health benefits of wine. In 1978 I was given 10 minutes to live so I grabbed a glass of wine, slugged it down, got enough confidence to grab the gun out of her husbands hand and high-tailed it home. But, I digress. Don't know many good wine shops in your area. The only one that comes to mind is Audet's on Boston St. I haven't been in that area in years. The closest I've been lately was the California Olive Oil Company on Canal St. in Salem and a restaurant supply house down off of Bell Circle in Revere.

You are a mess, WW!

- Kcwhippet - 02-03-2005

Yeah, but he's our very own mess, and we love him.

- Miles Raymond - 02-03-2005

Kcwhippet,

Thanks for the info. Bell Circle is not very far at all from me. Neither Salem for that matter.

You wouldn't happen to be a Patriots fan would you?

- Kcwhippet - 02-03-2005

You mean the team that's about to win their third Super Bowl in four years? Those Patriots? I've been known to follow their antics on occasion.

- Thomas - 02-03-2005

WW, I almost spilled my glass of wine laughing at that one--don't do that again to me...

- Miles Raymond - 02-04-2005

Kcwhippet,

Thanks for the names. I've just been doing some reading up on these on Wine.com plus also reading up on some wine basics as well. I think I may purchase a couple of these selctions on the way home from work tonight.

I can't wait for Sunday to get here GO PATS!!!

Well I was able to find a bottle of 2003 Echelon Pinot Noir and a 2002 Estancia of the same. I happen to be enjoying the Estancia very much. I have yet to try the Echelon.

Hi everybody

I just signed on to this website and I noticed that Miles and I share the same goals, except I haven't seen Sideways yet.

I too am a fan of red wine. My favorite is Rosso Toscano by Vino Sorelli. I had this when I was in Rome over Christmas.

It was very smooth, but that's all I could say about it. I would like to describe the taste in more detail. I want to learn how to taste wine. Not just red but all kinds.

Also, I want to know what foods go with certain wine. I know there are plenty of combinations but does anybody have a basic list of some?

LEt me know if anyone here is from California. Thanx

- californiagirl - 02-07-2005

Ah, but there are only but a few of us on the west coast! Welcome to our hubble board!!

If you're new to wine, and in search of answers, I'd highly recommend purchasing a copy of Andrea Immers' "Great Wine made Simple". Good book, very informative, and easy to follow.

Cheers!

- vincenzo - 02-07-2005

I'll make sure to look into it.

"Hubble" Board? I know some of us may seem spacey at times, but you don't have to telescope...er...telegraph it to the world.

YAWN, SNORT, YAWN agin. Is the game over yet? WW

- wondersofwine - 02-08-2005

Miles,
The Echelon Pinot Noir is one I like. I've only had it by the glass at a restaurant in Charlotte so far. KC says they sell a lot of it from the store where he works. Saintsbury Garnet (the lower end of their Pinot Noir line--sells in the teens) is another I like. It may not be that hard to find.

- Salesmanlqr2 - 02-10-2005

If your like Pinot Noir I would suggest a wine from Cally called Wild Horse.

Or a wine from Wash St. Called Montinoir

these are great wines for the price around $15.00 to $20.00

- Miles Raymond - 02-10-2005

Thanks all for the names. I have also tried Turning Leaf which I enjoyed. I seem to really like Sebastiani though.

About tasting...

It seems to take a couple of tastes before I get a real sense of the flavor. Is this normal? Is this a bad thing meaning that I may not have good pallet for tasting?

Oh yeah.. Welcome Vincenzo!
