My brother is turning 50 soon and enjoys a cabernet ao merlot.
1. Is a 50 year old bottle of either type too old?
2. How much would it cost (ball park)?

Unfortunately, your two questions have no general answers.
To answer either one would have to talk about specific wines--not one Cabernet or Merlot wine is anything like another, and that goes for both its aging potential and its price.
The best thing for you is to talk with a reputable wine retailer for suggestions.

Went to www.wine-searcher.com and tried a few things. Typed in Lafite and 1950, and found one for $408.84. Have no idea how good it is or whether it is any good at all. Would I? Nope.

Unfortunately your brother needed to be born a year earlier or a year later.50 wasn`t particularly good in Bordeaux and finding a cab from Calif would be a daunting task. How about a port or madiera?
