I am a complete philistine when it comes to wine and wonder if anyone can suggest one good "all round" red wine and one good "all round" white wine that I can serve my wedding guests?

Hi Gillian and welcome to the Wine Board. Taste tests with crowds have revealed that you can hardly miss with an Australian Shiraz and an Australian or Californian Chardonnay. If it was my party, I would get an "unwooded" chardonnay, but others prefer a little oak. Pick your own price point. Good wines are available starting at around 1.5 L.

I would try wines from south of France - Vin d'pay area. You can't go wrong with the price and the quality is decent. You can go with Merlot, Cabernet or Syrah for reds or Chardonnay for the white.
Innkeeper, I'm going to agree with you with the unoaked whites. Espcically since she is in Scotland. I'll bet you they dont' like over oaked whites.

I thought '1.5L' was a typing error Innkeeper. There are positively no wines here at 1.5 pounds (£1.5), that figure is about the cost of customs duty plus value added tax per 75cl bottle. It is possible to find fairly decent everyday wine in supermarket stores such as Sainsbury, Tesco, Safeway, Asda, etc. starting at about 4 pounds (£4/$7.40), but Gilian F I am not suggesting you get the wines for your big day from them. Winoweenie, lbs refers to weight not our currency. T

I think a good wedding wine is Far Bend Merlot. I bought some from a company that personalized it. The wine was great and I put the photo on the bottle which tickled my wife...
