I am a complete philistine when it comes to wine and wonder if anyone can suggest one good "all round" red wine and one good "all round" white wine that I can serve my wedding guests?

- Innkeeper - 04-06-2004

Hi Gillian and welcome to the Wine Board. Taste tests with crowds have revealed that you can hardly miss with an Australian Shiraz and an Australian or Californian Chardonnay. If it was my party, I would get an "unwooded" chardonnay, but others prefer a little oak. Pick your own price point. Good wines are available starting at around 1.5 L.

- wineguruchgo - 04-06-2004

I would try wines from south of France - Vin d'pay area. You can't go wrong with the price and the quality is decent. You can go with Merlot, Cabernet or Syrah for reds or Chardonnay for the white.

Innkeeper, I'm going to agree with you with the unoaked whites. Espcically since she is in Scotland. I'll bet you they dont' like over oaked whites.

Hello fellow Brit and congratulations. I may be able to point you in the direction of an excellent supplier, one who will most probably cut you a good deal too. However, I do need to know where in Bonnie Scotland you live. T

Innkeeper, what is 1.5 L please? T

- Innkeeper - 04-06-2004

One and half pounds. Don't have the proper symbol on my puter.

- winoweenie - 04-06-2004

What be wrong with sayin' 1&1/2 lbs??ww

- Tastevin - 04-07-2004

I thought '1.5L' was a typing error Innkeeper. There are positively no wines here at 1.5 pounds (£1.5), that figure is about the cost of customs duty plus value added tax per 75cl bottle. It is possible to find fairly decent everyday wine in supermarket stores such as Sainsbury, Tesco, Safeway, Asda, etc. starting at about 4 pounds (£4/$7.40), but Gilian F I am not suggesting you get the wines for your big day from them. Winoweenie, lbs refers to weight not our currency. T

I'm sure WW knows that, Tastevin, hence the use of the "wink" smiley face.

Will have to get eye transplants T

No 1.5 pound Chucks there? I've heard that the Aussies are dumping all their surplus on your lovely isle.

- winoweenie - 04-07-2004

Yeppo there Tasty, the Weener is not quite as dense as lead and you'll find 96&3/4% of my post are tongue-in-cheek. Only whenced talking about me beloved reds do I be serious. WW

I wish it was reflected in retail prices here, Innkeeper. T

I think a good wedding wine is Far Bend Merlot. I bought some from a company that personalized it. The wine was great and I put the photo on the bottle which tickled my wife...

- Kcwhippet - 04-19-2004

Which photo was it that tickled your wife, aandrawes? BTW, how do you get an Australian winery to personalize a bottle in Texas? Seems a bit out of the way, and I hope it was approved by the TTB.

I had some pics of my wife and I out near a waterfall that they used on a bottle of wine. They have all the greenlights from ATF and TABC. check them out personalwine.com.

ALT plus 0163 gets you the pound sterling symbol.
