I keep reading in different Wine Boards about "Verticals" I'm not clear exactly what that means.

The way I understand it is either tasting of different vintage of the same wine, or different wines of the same vintage (or varietal).

An example of a vertical is the 1982-2000 Chateau Lynch Bages.

An example of a horizontal is 12 different Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons from 1978.

Yeah, vertical takes you down the line of vintage years--horizontal goes across one vintage. It's a matter of visualizing, I suppose, and you can intermingle verticle tastings with horizontals; try visualizing that!

I think Foodie just inevted the "diagonal" tasting... altough if you tatste enough, you'd probably end up with a nice sine wave, or something...
