What is a shiraz, what does it taste like, and what are good brands?

Shiraz is the Australian word for syrah. Syrah is the primary grape of the Rhone Valley. When young and/or made lightly it is both fruity and slightly peppery. It can be made huge and long lasting, in which case it takes on added complexity.
