Check if any wine shops or restaurants in your area have wine tastings--maybe Saturday afternoons at a wine shop. If you really are interested in learning about wines, pick up a book or two at the library or bookstore. Two frequently recommended for new wine enthusiasts are "Wine for Dummies," and Andrea Immer's "Great Wines Made Simple."
Both discuss general characteristics of different grape varieties and their wines, and give suggestions for how to purchase, store, pour, sniff, taste, etc. wine. Andrea's book suggests two wines to compare side-by-side to distinguish the differences.
