I just recently recieved a bottle of chateau de beaucastel (1996, Burgandy). And I was just wandering what difference there is between a chateau and anything eles. For instance is it worth more or what? Im clueless as to what the difference is. [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/confused.gif[/img]

Hi JR and welcome to the board. Simply put , normally when the word Chateau is used it denotes that the wine was Estate Bottled. Also, in most cases, there is a primary residence on the property. ( Most times very impressive)Has nothing to do with quality, but most Chateaus` make pretty good stuff. Think you may have mis-read or posted as the only Chateau Beaucastel I know of is in the Rhone region of France not Burgandy. Happy Holidays.winoweenie

You might go ahead and post the label, because moi aussi only knows of Chateau De Beaucastel, Chateauneuf Du Pape (aka CDP). It is a big red blend from the Rhone.

Chateau de Beaucastel then after the coat of arms the is CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE; right below that is something that reads APPELLATION CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE CONTROLEE; then below that it darker yet smaller print is Ste FERMIERE DES VIGNOBLES PIERRE PERRIN AU CHATEAU DE BEAUCASTEL COURTHEZON (Vse)FRANCE
a list of the grapes (if thats useful) that they grow is Mourvedre, grenache, counoise, syrah, and cinsault predominant. Thanks for all your help this far.

It's a Rhone, specifically a Lower Rhone, and just about the best wine from the region.

You were not offensive to anyone, IMHO.
However...........
I won't pretend to even try to speak for WW - but he was speaking his mind, that's all. When WW speaks about wines, listen.
I trust he just got a bit impatient when he told you once it was a CDP and then you still said it had to be a Bourgogne (Burgundy) and that he might be wrong.
Spend a little time here and read his posts. You will learn a lot about wine!
CDP is not from Bourgogne, no doubt about that at all.
