Question about Merlot - Printable Version

Hello,

I'm not very informed when it comes to wine.
My parents never consuming it, so I never really learned much of anything about it.

Recently, I've absolutely fell in love with White Merlot. It's not as fruity as White zinfandel, and not as strong as a regular Merlot.

Anyway, my question:

I eat out very often, and have yet to find a place that serves a White Merlot.

What would be the wine with the closest taste to this? That's a common entry on wine lists?


Also, is White Merlot considered something like Mad Dog 20/20, which is why no one serves it? [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]

Hi Dol and welcome to the board. Asked and answered. Not too many wine lists will have any blush wines on their menu. A nice fun beverage that woos some beer drinkers over to the wine scene. WW

Hi Dolidis, and welcome to the Wine Board. The White Merlots I've had were less sweet rather than less fruity than White Zinfandel. Not knowing which brands of these wines you've had, it is hard to tell which you prefer, dryer or less fruity. Not knowing which, and not knowing where you live, it is very hard to make a recommendation.

The reason you don not find White Merlot in restaurants is two fold. Restaurants that don't have much of a list would rather have one or two White Zins because they sell; and can't afford to have any other White Things on the list. More sophisticated restaurants don't have White Anything, because they have more sophisticated Rose's than Whites made from red grapes which are the same kind of wines. These Rose's are from places like Southern France or Rosatos' from Italy or Spain.

What I'm getting to here is that you may enjoy wines from Europe than what is available elsewhere. For rose's try what I've suggested; for reds try things like Beaujolais Villages or some lighter reds from Northern Italy, such as Bardolino or lower priced Barberas.
