Welcome to the Wine Board. If you like Cabernet Sauvignon, you're in luck. The 2001 vintage of California Cabs was the best in many, many years and they'll be slow maturing wines, also. So, if you buy some of them, and keep them under good storage conditions, they should be just wonderful when the grandkids reach their twenty first along with the wines. I suggest you go to your local fine wine shop and speak with the head wine guy. Tell him what you want and your budget, and I'm sure you'll have some tremendous wines to put away.

There are many good ones to choose from. Some of the truly special ones can only be had from the mailing lists of premium, small production wineries. When the wines are available, the winery lets you know what's out for you to order, then they ship directly to you, the consumer. Unfortunately, Michigan prohibits direct to consumer wine shipments, so it's a moot point in your case, and the retailers can't even get those wines for you. They have to get their wines from the state's wholesalers who don't deal with small production wineries. They want volume from large wineries, like Mondavi, Gallo and the like.

I bought a couple wines that were outstanding for my 21 year old when he turned 21. I bought them from personalwine.com and they were custom labeled for the birthday. Great australian wines. Although I didnt care too much for their texas wine...

cheers and cherio!

I'm a bit skeptical about this personalwine bit. I went to their web site and picked the first wine on their list - the Mont St. Vincent Pierre Chainier Chardonnay. They list it at $198 per case ($16.50 a bottle). Well, everywhere else that has that wine is selling it at $9.99 a bottle. In fact, I found one place with a special close out case price of $66 - that's 1/3 of the personalwine.com price. I don't think I'll be buying any wine from them soon, even with a personalized label.

direct del to mi isn't only hiccup.I've learned many 2001 are just being released, then was told it's(selection)"allocated". why would restaurants get first chance? I've got a good chance on Far Niente cab I'll know more tomorrow .

Because being on a wine menu is nice advertising!
