Is it possible to open a wine bottle without a corkscrew?

Oh my goodness, Brooke, I'm already shuddering at the responses you'll get to this one!

Actually, I've heard that if you are on a picnic and have forgotten your corkscrew, remove the foil, hold the bottle horizontal, then firmly but gently (oxymoron?) strike the bottom of the bottle against a tree. Supposedly, the pressure that builds up pushes the cork out.

I admit, though, that I've not gotten up the courage or had the opportunity to try it!

The only time I can remember not having that most indespencible of items was when I flew back to the mills last summer and was reminded the checkpoints were confiscating anything with a point.(Explains why Bucksnort wears a hat whenced going thru )
That evening I remembered no appliance...Dern!Heck-Fires! Blazes!!! Took off the foil, wrapped a pencil with a towel and proceeded to push the cork into the bottle. Messy, and takes a long time to suck the towel clean, but did the job.WW

WW, Necessity is the mother of invention.
LOL at your reference to Bucko's head.

And then there's the WINE SABRE, for all you sword lovers. One exact, precise blow to the proper spot on the bottle and Voila!

Hey, I'm new here, but if you have a screwdriver, a long screw (noun not verb) and a pair of pliers you should have everything you need to get the cork out. And after the wine...well, it's verb time.
