Help! Novice with wine and the internet. In search of a few specific years of wine within specific states. I'm collecting only.
Having trouble finding in local liquor/grocery stores. Any suggestions on where to look? Appreciate any tips. Thanks in advance.

Jane...I'm unclear on just what you are looking for. Give us a specific example. Are you looking for wines from specific years from specific states...like a 1985 from Kansas, or something like that?

By the way...collecting wine is fun...drinking wine is a lot more fun.

Firstly, thanks for responding. And yes, you are correct. Specifically, I am looking for: 94 - Oregon, 96 - Nevada, 97 - Illinois & 98 - Hawaii. I'm not even sure if these states even produce wine etc.., just taking a shot in the dark really. Additionally, I appreciate your comment about the drinking of wine is as much fun if not more as collecting it, but to date, I have yet to aquire a taste for it. Let alone any alcoholic beverage, I haven't found a wine that really tickles my fancy, but I am certain, I have only experienced the less expensive brands etc., possibly contributing to the bitterness taste.
The specific years I am looking for I have no particular taste as to red, white or the other variations. Thanks again for any assistance you can provide.

Jane...All four states you mentioned do have wineries, although NV and HI only have one apiece...IL only has a few...OR has quite a few. 96, 97 & 98 are all current vintages with which you should have no problem finding. 1994 from Oregon will be a little trickier...maybe someone's Reserve Pinot Noir would be that old.

You can go to a website at www.tastings.com and check out its "Yellow Pages" section which provides a winery directory of some 1200 wineries...not all there is in the US but a pretty good chunk of what there is.

Re wines you might like for starters...try wines labeled White Zinfandel, White or Johhannisberg Riesling or Gewurztraminer (Fetzer's has a nice level of sweetness you should like). Also try Riunite Lambrusco or Soleo Vineyard Berry (the latter is one of the new flavored wines and is very inexpensive...you can even drink it on ice).

Wow! This is great! Thanks so much for all of the information, it is excellent and I feel more confiedent now I will find what I am searcbing for.
Additionally, thanks for the recommendations for the wines to try. Even though I hadn't aquired a taste yet, I have been wanting to try still. If you're interested, I will let you know the outcome of finding what I'm searching for and also how the wines I've tried turn out.
Thanks again for your advice and your time, it is much appreciated!!!

Jerry,

When you say Hawaii only has one winery, I presume you're referring to Tedeschi on Maui. I've come across a reference to another - Volcano Winery on the big island. Among others, I understand they're growing Symphony they got from UC Davis.

Incidentally, Tedeschi wines can be found at Cost Plus and Beverages & More in California.

Bob,
Thanks for the add'l listing of that winery in Maui. I just got off of the tastings.com yellow pages and found only the Volcano Winery on the Big Island. Not to mention the fact that I'm going to stop off at Cost Plus on my way home and check out what they have too.
This is great!

P.S. To the Wine Curmudgeon - if I understand it correctly your name is Jerry. Thanks Jerry!

Curmy (at least I hope I can call you that)!
Many thanks to you and the others again. What a difference between this week and two weeks ago with my original request. I now have in my possesion the following as a result of your suggestions. For my Illinois wine that I just got through the mail last night; Chancellor '97 with Illinois on the label. I should be receiving today or tomorrow a '94 Pinor Noir from Oregon and I picked up a bottle of Maui Blanc from Cost Plus. The Maui wine doesn't have a year on it, but that's ok. The Nevada wine was the toughest. I contacted the one winery in Nevada and they don't have years on their labels. Additionally, according to the girl who answered the phone, they didn't make wine in 1996 (the year I needed). So, I just so happened to be in Vegas over the past weekend and I picked up (I can't believe I don't remember what kind) a bottle of a 1996 vintage and will use that for my collection instead. It doesn't say Nevada or any other state on it. So that's not bad.
Thanks to you all once again for your excellent suggestions, it has really helped me tremendously. I also picked up
a Fetzer's Johhannisberg that I'm actually going to try this weekend! Who knows, maybe I'll like it and get more daring on the next try.
Take Care!
