I recently went to a dinner and somene had wine mixed with pineapple orange juice. I actually enjoyed it. Is this normal? Do you have any suggestions as to what type of wine to purchase to mix with this type of juice?

Hi Gyzmo, and welcome to the Wine Board. What you had was a homemade wine cooler. The bottled ones were almost as good when they still had wine in them. We still enjoy the homemade ones in the summertime especially. There is no sense in using high quality wines in these, but don't use rotgut either. Something like a Yellow Tail Shiraz will do fine.

Welcome to the board, Gyzmo. The only wine that comes to mind that mixes well with fruit juice is Champagne.

Your other option for vino/fruit juice happiness is Sangria, of course. There was a thread devoted to it about a year ago, but in the meantime, here's a recipe cribbed off the ol' Innerweb:

1/2 cup brandy
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate
1/3 cup orange juice
1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine
1/2 cup triple sec
1 lemon, sliced into rounds
1 orange, sliced into rounds
1 lime, sliced into rounds
1/4 cup white sugar (optional)
8 maraschino cherries
2 cups carbonated water (optional)

In a large pitcher or bowl, mix together the brandy, lemon juice, lemonade concentrate, orange juice, red wine, triple sec, and sugar. Float slices of lemon, orange and lime, and maraschino cherries in the mixture. Refrigerate overnight for best flavor. For a fizzy sangria, add club soda just before serving.

Skeeters' Notes: For best result, serve with as many friends/family members as possible, accompany with buttloads of snacks and call a flotilla of cabs to collect everyone at the end of the night.

My memory has a blind spot regarding Sangria, probably due to over-indulgence in long-ago youth.... don' wanna remember.

I remember nights in the Algarve in Portugal with a pitcher of Sangria, the warm summer sun, the beaches and the ocean............

I'm all for sangria! Love it! But I'm kind of picky - b/c I had some good stuff the first time I had it, and haven't been satisified with any others since then.

I'm NOT one who likes mimosas or other such fruit juices + champagne. They remind me too much of the 4oz. of caster oil (mixed with orange juice) I ingested trying to get my baby out of me a year and a half ago!! Yuck! And now I just can't get myself to ingest any other thing mixed with o.j. - blech!

Sangria sounds yummy, though!
