HI, i am a white wine fan, dont really care for the dryness of reds. The problem is that i am going out to dinner at a very fancy place and i know i will order a steak. i would like a glass of wine with it and dont want to look like a fool. i have tried merlot and really didnt care for it (too dry-i think), although i have tried a white merlot and enjoyed it alot. is there a red wine that you would suggest to try?
edit: i have read about Beaujolais, is that really sweet?

Hi JB, and welcome to the Wine Board. There are two kinds of sweet; real sweet and apparent sweet. Real sweet means that some residual sugar has been left in the wine. Dry means that all the sugar has been fermented into alcohol. Apparent sweet is a dry wine that has so much fresh fruit in its aroma and taste, that it seems sweet.

A really sweet red wine is Lambrusco. An apparently sweet red wine is Beaujolais.

The traditional matches for steak are Cab and Merlot...

These probably won't fit into your likes. I guess I would try, if they have a nice list, to get a Cotes du Rhone that has a high content of Syrah (ask the server) or a lower priced american syrah. These may fit your tasting preference and should match with the steak alright. Good luck, and let us know what you get and how it went.
