- mark esselman - 05-31-2000 I am a relative novice in regard to fine wines. At a recent charity event, some friends and I bid for a number of bottles of wine and, for a very good cause, we paid a considerable sum for this wine. Now, we must divide the "gains." Most of my colleagues are well versed in this art. I was hoping that I could get some advice relative to ratings, assessments, etc., of the various wines we have purchased so I can "draft" intelligently. Our purchase includes: PINOT NOIR Steele Carneros 1997 Etude Carneros 1997 David Bruce Sonoma 1997 Kings Estate Oregon 1997 MERLOT Swanson 1997 Sinsky Reserve 1995 Duckhorn Howell Mountain 1995 CABERNETS Chateau Montelena 1996 Chateau Montelena 1995 Beringer Private Reserve 1993 Beringer Private Reserve 1992 Fisher Wedding Vineyard 1995 Conn Creek 1996 Mondavi Private Reserve 1993 Frogs Leap Rutherford 1996 Dalle Valle 1993 Fife Reserve 1997 Groth 1997 Arrowood 1996 Silver Oak 1995 St. Francis 1996 MERITAGE Conn Creek Anthology 1996 Dominus 1997 Napanook 1997 Rubicon 1995 Rubicon 1994 Kathryn Kennedy Lateral 1997 MISCELLANEOUS REDS Ferrari Carano Siena 1997 Fife Cabernet Franc 1996 Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel 1997 Swanson Alexis 1997 AUSTRALIA Rosemount Balmoral Syrah 1996 Rosemount Traditional 1997 Rosemount Mountain Blue 1996 FRENCH Chateau Duhart-Milon 1996 Chateau Duhart-Milon 1995 Chateau Cantemerle 1995 La Chappelle De Lafon-Rochet 1995 Chateau Armailhac 1996 ITALIAN Luce 1995 Banfi Summus 1994 Castello Di Brolio Chianti 1993 San Felice Vigorello 1994 Antinori Tiganello 1996 Bertani Amarone 1967 Bertani Amarone 1968 Bertani Amarone 1975 Bertani Amarone 1976 On the following, I have the "Wine Spectator" list info. but would appreciate any and all comments: Taylor-Flagate Port 1994 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou 1995 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages 1996 Opus One 1996 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet 1996 Bollinger Brut Grand Annee 1990 Chateau Latour Paullac 1996 Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay 1997 Beaulieu Vineyards Reserve Chardonnay 1996 Penfolds Grange 1994 Beringer Private Reserve Chardonnay 1997 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Anderson Valley 1993 Sterling Cabernet Reserve 1996 St. Francis Old Vine Zinfandel 1997 Columbia Crest Chardonnay Estate 1997 Mount Eden Chardonnay Macgregor Vineyards 1997 Hess Collection Cabernet 1995 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet 1995 St. Francis Sonoma Reserve Chardonnay 1997 Steele California Chardonnay 1997/375 ml Beaulieu Vinyards Tapestry Reserve 1996 Gloria Ferrer Chardonnay 1997 Raymond Reserve Cabernet 1997 Chateau Lynch-Bages 1996 Chateau Pichon-Longueville-Baron 1996 Whitehall Lane Cabernet 1997 Bernardus Chardonnay 1997 Chateau Souvrain Chardonnay 1997 Hess Collection Chardonnay 1997 La Granja Nuestra Senora De Remelluri 1996 - Randy Caparoso - 05-31-2000 Wow. You don't ask for much, you know. Some people would pay consultants good money for this kind of advice; but the consultants would have to work pretty hard, digging through data and tasting notes. You can take any one of those wines -- all of which are generally wonderful stuff, by the way -- and have the little elves on the wineboard merrily chipping away with this comment and that. Any ONE of those wines. Perhaps you should narrow it down to the really-need-to-know items. Friendly advice. - Drew - 05-31-2000 I didn't see a troll in the bunch!!! Drew - Innkeeper - 05-31-2000 Agree with Randy and Drew. Divide them up evenly by type. Would love to have all of them in my cellar, and would like to commend the organizers of the event. - hotwine - 05-31-2000 Nor did I spot any trolls, duds, or losers by any other name. I counted 78 wines (assume they are all single bottles...). I think you'll find most of the elves on this board have lives, and are not looking for second careers as wine researchers. Depending on what your group paid for them, you got some real buys. And if the charity is a worthy cause, you could have bought swampwater, and still come out a winner. Be sure to store them properly to preserve their value. - mrdutton - 05-31-2000 A glass or two of wine a day has some healthful, beneficial qualities.......... I'd suggest you start right now!!!! Did anyone else at the event get a bottle?I`ll give you a partial based on my own preferences ( and the approx value ) Pinots:Etude, Steele.Merlot : Duckhorn, Swanson...Cabs: Dalle Valle,Ch Mont 95, Chat Monr 96, Beringer Res 92, Silver Oak 95 Meritage Dominus, Rubican 94, Rubican 95, Napanook 97. The rest with the exception of the Penfolds Grange are fairly equal. If these were donated wines from individuals this must be one hell of a cause. Get a Screwpull. Winoweenie - winoweenie - 06-01-2000 Heck-Fire guys, went back and noticed Mark was from Houston. They really DO do it bigger in Texas!!!! Winoweenie - Caesar - 06-01-2000 I have personnal exper. with many of these, and I must say, like everyone else, that you are in for a very merry time. I would suggest, however, that you gain some knowledge on proper cellaring, considering most of the Bordeaux and Cabs I see here.Take a look in the appropriate section of this board. Great buy!!!(He said turning green with envy...) Caesar. - mrdutton - 06-02-2000 If you don't have a Screwpull, I have one......... I am semi-retired and am free to travel..... if my wife allows. Have Screwpull will travel. - winoweenie - 06-03-2000 MrD, was it Foodie or Innkeeper that said you had no heart? Your compassionate reply puts the Kiebash on that fairy tale. What a Guy! Winoweenie - ThePattersons - 06-03-2000 Well, you didn't mention how many friends went in on this....and how many more new friends you will all have once they see this list! We are still drooling over the majority of the wines ourselves. How about dividing by point ratings? It may sound strange but maybe each can choose for each point rating if more than one wine falls under them. I would also suggest that anything over a 95 or 96 ( I haven't checked, but there should be a few) should be shared by all at a dinner together. That way everyone gets to taste the great ones together. Of course, if there are bottles that you all just can't decide on.....we can send you our address and take them off your hands. Too bad we are in CA! Good Luck! |
