I am a relative novice in regard to fine wines. At a recent charity event, some friends and I bid for a number of bottles of wine and, for a very good cause, we paid a considerable sum for this wine. Now, we must divide the "gains."

Most of my colleagues are well versed in this art. I was hoping that I could get some advice relative to ratings, assessments, etc., of the various wines we have purchased so I can "draft" intelligently. Our purchase includes:

Wow. You don't ask for much, you know. Some people would pay consultants good money for this kind of advice; but the consultants would have to work pretty hard, digging through data and tasting notes. You can take any one of those wines -- all of which are generally wonderful stuff, by the way -- and have the little elves on the wineboard merrily chipping away with this comment and that. Any ONE of those wines.

Perhaps you should narrow it down to the really-need-to-know items. Friendly advice.

I didn't see a troll in the bunch!!!

Drew

Agree with Randy and Drew. Divide them up evenly by type. Would love to have all of them in my cellar, and would like to commend the organizers of the event.

Nor did I spot any trolls, duds, or losers by any other name. I counted 78 wines (assume they are all single bottles...). I think you'll find most of the elves on this board have lives, and are not looking for second careers as wine researchers.
Depending on what your group paid for them, you got some real buys. And if the charity is a worthy cause, you could have bought swampwater, and still come out a winner.
Be sure to store them properly to preserve their value.

A glass or two of wine a day has some healthful, beneficial qualities..........

I'd suggest you start right now!!!!

I certainly agree with Randy about a consultants fee. Did anyone else at the event get a bottle?I`ll give you a partial based on my own preferences ( and the approx value ) Pinots:Etude, Steele.Merlot : Duckhorn, Swanson...Cabs: Dalle Valle,Ch Mont 95, Chat Monr 96, Beringer Res 92, Silver Oak 95 Meritage Dominus, Rubican 94, Rubican 95, Napanook 97. The rest with the exception of the Penfolds Grange are fairly equal. If these were donated wines from individuals this must be one hell of a cause. Get a Screwpull. Winoweenie

Heck-Fire guys, went back and noticed Mark was from Houston. They really DO do it bigger in Texas!!!! Winoweenie

I have personnal exper. with many of these, and I must say, like everyone else, that you are in for a very merry time. I would suggest, however, that you gain some knowledge on proper cellaring, considering most of the Bordeaux and Cabs I see here.Take a look in the appropriate section of this board.

Great buy!!!(He said turning green with envy...)

Caesar.

If you don't have a Screwpull, I have one.........

I am semi-retired and am free to travel..... if my wife allows.

Have Screwpull will travel.

MrD, was it Foodie or Innkeeper that said you had no heart? Your compassionate reply puts the Kiebash on that fairy tale. What a Guy! Winoweenie

Well, you didn't mention how many friends went in on this....and how many more new friends you will all have once they see this list! We are still drooling over the majority of the wines ourselves. How about dividing by point ratings? It may sound strange but maybe each can choose for each point rating if more than one wine falls under them. I would also suggest that anything over a 95 or 96 ( I haven't checked, but there should be a few) should be shared by all at a dinner together. That way everyone gets to taste the great ones together. Of course, if there are bottles that you all just can't decide on.....we can send you our address and take them off your hands. Too bad we are in CA!
Good Luck!
