Last night during our wine tasting class some asked the question, "What is a flight?"
No one there including the owner knew for sure. There were some very interesting and original answers.
Does anyone know if it really has a true meaning?

Put simply, a flight of wine at a tasting refers to one round of similarly-classed wines. In other words: for the first flight, we will taste Cabernets from Alaska--leave me out, if you please....

Foodie, why do they use the term flight?
PS. Alaska? would that be the long sought but soldom found "winesicle" that the Eskimo's keep in their freezers.

Dogster and Foodie, ~Twere back during the early 1900`s that it was decided to differentiate between the first group of drinks and the last. Then ,they were imbibing all different types of beverages. It was decided to group similar beverages in the same tasting series. After much soul searching they decided to name these various tasting series as flights. This, OF Course, Happened in Kitty Hawk, N.C.Winoweenie

Can't argue with that explanation, which essentially means (re, the use of the word flight) why not?
Flight is descriptive; line up the wines (the runway) one by one open and pour (the approach) look at, smell and then taste (the check system, and then take-off) record your impressions (the black box)now that is stretching it....

Actually I think that it was the Rat Pack who coined the term, as old blue eyes was singing Fly Me to the Moon, as they were hammering down flights of Scotch..... or so the rumor goes. }:>
