May I ask for your educated opinion please?

I am a member of the Book of the Month Club, and this month's selection card has a special highlight on (go figure) "The Wine Bible" (who read my rant about getting into wine and now I see it everywhere?)

Anyway, it's over 900 pages, and the write up sounds great, but it is far from unbiased. Do any of you own the book, and would any of you recommend it? It's about $16, so I think it is resonable if it proves true to the description.

I welcome your input.

Don't own it, never heard of it.....

Thanks bucko,

The description says it has "everything you need to know to buy, store, serve, and enjoy..." plus, has 500 photos, and covers all the different types of wine. It sounds interesting, and of course, they name drop and have a quote by Robert Mondavi singing it's praises.

The Wine Bible is by Karen MacNeil-Fife. She's pretty good as a wine writer, but seems to have her own set of biases. An interesting item is that you won't find a critique of Fife winery because it's owned by her husband. From what I've heard, the book is quite good, and long.

The Wine Bible is well written, and fairly comprehensive. That said, there's not a lot new in here, but if you're a novice, that shouldn't matter. It's very readable, with a front section about grapes, vineyards, winemaking, tasting etc. The last 2/3 is organized geographically, so can be read a few pages at a time depending on your interest. One criticism is her overuse of "clever" little analogies and anthropomorphisms for wine.

If you don't have many other wine books, Buy it, It's a steal at $16.

I received the book as a Christmas present and as a novice it seems to be a good resource. I say make the purchase.

Thanks for all the help. I think I will get it.
