I have only bought wine from the supermarket, but have often said that I would one day buy a bottle from a wine store to see if I would notice a difference in the market wine which is stored upright, to one that is placed so the cork will not dry out. Does a $58.00 bottle of wine really taste better than a $14.00 bottle? My birthday is Friday and my good friend insists that we splurge on a couple of bottles.

Impossible to answer. Yes, a $58 bottle usually how more time and attention in the winemaking process than a $14 bottle does. That said, I have tried some $125 bottles that left me wanting the $14 bottle. It all depends on the wine.

Sharron, there is no inherent problem w/ "grocery store wine"...it simply tends toward mass-produced, mass-distributed brands. Private wine stores can focus on smaller producers & (sometimes) higher quality.

Storage would not likely be a difference between vendors since distributors need to "move" grocery store wine quickly, & price it to do so.

If you want to splurge, then look under the "Best Buys" thread on this site or under the thread for your preferred varietal. Unless you feel compelled to shell out $60 for a bottle, you can get excellent wines for much less, & many are noted in the threads on this site.

cheers,
cp

Thanks, CP

I'll make a note of the store & try to get by before the holiday. Friday is my day so I will for sure go by then.
