Why should one decant a wine and what types are wines are best when decanted??

We have had this discussion before--you might find it in the archives. In short: some of us believe it is problematic to decant an old wine; exposing an old wine to more oxygen can be a bad move. Conversely, a young wine might be helped by contact with oxygen during decanting. It is not necessary to decant to remove sediment, just pour slowly and with the bottle slightly facing up.
