What types of wine is best with
(1) Jerk chicken
(2) coconut shrimp
(3) bbq spare ribs

- Drew - 09-03-2004

We prepare Jerk chicken often and like to pair with red zin or a nice spicy grenache. I like reisling or a sparkler with the shrimp and the bbq spare ribs depends on if a dry rub or sauce is used in prep.

Hi Welsh and welcome to the Wine Board. Most BBQ ribs can be eaten with what you drink with the jerk chicken. In addition to what Drew suggested, you could also try something from the Southern Rhone, or a Shiraz from Australia.

I've used a Pinot Noir lately with BBQ'd babybacks, and it's worked well. Ribs are basted in a sweet red sauce and smoked in foil, then unwrapped, re-basted, and grilled to finish. Think I posted the recipe some time back, but will do so again if needed. The PN lately has been either Kenwood or Estancia.

We use a vinegar based sauce with our baby backs and Pinot works great with them because of the acidity match. With heavier, spicier sauces we prefer the other wines mentioned above.

I don't do much jerk chicken, but I do make a mean jerk pork shoulder. Those Scotch Bonnets make it HOT, so I often find a nice spanish rose seems to fit the bill...or a Red Stripe lager of course.
