I'm sure you folks see this question virtually every day, but....

I currently keep my wine in a small basement area in my home. Winter temps 50-60F Summer temps approach 70 or so. As such, I haven't bought much wine requiring long term cellaring for fear it would ruin. I would like to expand my horizons and collect some wines for long term storage. Do you think I could get away with cellaring wines for several years under these conditions, or should I invest in a wine storage unit.

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. My summer temps only reach the low 60's, but your temps, as long as the change is gradual, should be fine. The only thing to take into account is that they might age ever so slightly faster then if they were kept under constant ideal conditions. This really should not affect you much however, since your temps DO stay under the 70 degree mark. IMO, you can certainly go ahead and purchase some wines for aging if that is what you desire. Lay them down on their side in a quiet corner, and enjoy the anticipation of their opening.
