I'm a newbie. Am I the only one? Well I'm in the process of learning how to taste and describe wine so hopefully being part of this forum will help. I'm open for criticism...constructive or otherwise!

Do not be swayed by us professional wine people. We are not the answer--only a resource.

The best way to taste wine is to do it slowly and with focus. The best way to describe wine is to say what you think about it, in your own words.

Within those two best ways, there are some things that can help, but you can get that information from a basic wine book or class.

Allison, did you have any trouble registering? The reason why I ask is as you can see we have not any novices around here for a long time. We have made a lot of technical changes at wines.com and with the wine board in recent months; and I've been concerned that we have made things to difficult or threatening for folks.

I didn't have any trouble registering. I'm not sure what the difficulty is. Maybe you guys are intimidating! I kid! Anyway, thank you Foodie for the advice. I am doing a lot of reading now and trying to taste a variety of things that I haven't had before. It is helping distinguish different tastes and scents. Its a fun venture to be sure.
