To the clever Wine-Geeks on this board. I already know that wine is the singular most diverse adult-beverage in the world but, I have a question that no-one can seem to properly answer so I was hoping you guys could.

Here it is;

Approximately how many different wineries in
total are there worldwide?

Come on guys I know if anyone knows its you guys in here.

I'll take a stab at this question.
According to the latest U.S. Census there are ~4,700 wines in the U.S.

The U.S. is aprroximately 5,984,685 square miles.

The surface area of the earth is roughly 197,353,667 square miles of which 65,784,566 is land.

If you assume 2/3 of the land is suitable for growing grapes ~+/- 15 degrees from poles is too cold for grapes you get an approximation of 43,417,807 suare miles of growing region.

If you scale the number of wineries in the US to the size of the growing region in the world you get a number slightly larger than 34,000.

Nice stab, except there are more than 5,000 wineries in Bordeaux alone. Not only that, there are more than 10,000 wineries in Italy. So, that leaves about 14,000 wineries for the whole rest of the world, including the rest of France, Germany Spain, South Africa, Australia, Chile and Argentina. I think I may be able to get some more substantive info. I'll get back to you all on this.
