I keep around 30 bottles in my basement and here in Seattle we've had some very chilly weather this week (teens/20s at night). I don't think there's any danger in the bottles simply being very cold, but I'm sure if they froze....well, I'd hate to find out what that would do to them. So I guess the question is how cold is too cold for short term storage? I know I shouldn't expose them to rapid changes in temp, so that's partly why I just leave them there. any toughts?

Wines will freeze a few degrees below where water will freeze depending on how much alcohol they contain. Unless you lose your power, this is very unlikely to occur. Even if you lose power the interior of structures stays warmer that the outside. We have gone through eight days of power loss in January ('95) without losing any wine. Even if wine does briefly freeze, it can survive so long as the cork doesn't get pushed out. Wine is much more intolerant of heat than cold.

Thanks IK, that's what I was guessing, but I wanted to be sure.
