i have recently started work in an off licence as yet i dont know a medium dry sweet wine from another is there any way of knowing so that i can help customers who ask me for a specific wine

Hi Kaneelie, and welcome to the Wine Board. As in days of yore, the way to start is with a good book. Two excellent ones published in this country that may be available there are "Wine For Dummies" in the popular yellow and black cover, and Andrea Immer's "Great Wine Made Simple." Another excellent and easy to read tome published there is Michael Schuster's "Essential Winetasting."

Kan, this is NOT about you as I am sure you are a nice person who really wants to learn and help humanity.

BUT, why are people hiring people for sales help in wine shops with NO knowledge of product????? It is not like there is a shortage of underemployed wine geeks...
