Hello,
I don't really know much about wine, but I was thinking of picking up a bottle to give to my girlfriends' parents as a gift, as I'll be meeting them for the first time. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what would be a good "nice to meet you" wine. I'm not sure if they really know much about wine in general, but I would like to make a good impression with a nice bottle (anywhere from $20-$50) that I could pick up at a local liquor store. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi JB4f and welcome to the board. My suggestion is to buy a nice bottle of champagne. Bubbly is always welcome even with people who aren't wine savvy. Go to your best local merchant and he should help. WW

You may want to ask your gf if they have any objection to wine. You don't want to offend them if they are an AA member...
Otherwise, will you be having dinner and what type of food will be served?

I know that they drink wine on occassion, and her dad gets some kind of wine magazine. From what she's told me her mom usually just goes to the liquor store and gets a recommendation from whoever's working there at the time. They're interested in taste over price, so it doesn't have to be something flashy as long as it tastes good. I will be staying there for a few days, but we won't be having a meal at their house because of a busy schedule (parties, family events, etc.) so I don't really have much to go on in the way of food. Thanks for all your helpful suggestions so far, and if this information gives anyone further ideas feel free to post!

I am in a similar situation. However, I know that red wine is not an option due to allergies my friend has. What suggestions does anyone have for a white or rose wine? I'm looking in the price range of $20-$30.

I'll second the recommendation for Champagne for both of you.
Sydney, I'm not sure where you're located in the Chicago area, but there should be a Binny's somewhere near you. Ask them for a Blanc de Blancs in your price range, and they should be able to help you.

I would honestly recommend a white zinfandel. They are light and refreshing and most people that drink cheap or don't like wine much love it.
The other recomendation would be a German Riesling. Many of them have an added fruit flavor. My favorite...Loosen Riesling offers a strong flavors of peach and pear. These usually aren't too expensive and I think they are an incredible value.
